I'm a first time Freeze Miser user. What do I need to know?
What is required to install the Freeze Miser™?

Installation of the Freeze Miser requires threading to a faucet, hose, or other device securely and opening the water supply valve to full open.  Check to make sure that the Freeze Miser connection to the device is secure and no seepage is around the threads.  If placed on the end of a hose, the Freeze Miser should be off the ground enough to not sense any temperature feedback other than the hose water temperature.

Why the Freeze Miser™ might drip when first installed or reinstalled

If the Freeze Miser, prior to installation, was exposed to ambient air colder than its activation temperature of 37°F for an extended time, it may, when valve is turned on, immediately release water for a few minutes.  This is by design.  As the Freeze Miser adjusts for the water temperature being released, it may shut off the release, increase the release, or release an intermittent drip, all based on its 37°F water activation temperature. The same scenario can occur if the Freeze Miser is taken off the valve it’s protecting and left in ambient air that is less than 37°F and reinstalled.

Once installed, turn faucet on full

After installation or re-installation, make sure the valve sending water to the Freeze Miser is opened to full open.

How much water will it drip?
Many factors contribute to the water release rate and include ambient air temperature, length of pipe being protected, supply water temperature at source, etc.
Can I hook it up to my water hose?
Many customers use the Freeze Miser to protect their hose from freezing.
Will it work at -20°F?
Customers have reported satisfactory results with much colder than -20°F ambient temperatures.
Will it protect pipes or hoses that do not directly supply water to the Freeze Miser?

It will not. A hose or pipe that is branched off the main pipe being protected by the Freeze Miser has no freeze protection because the water being released by the Freeze Miser will not be released from that portion of the piping. For freeze protection that piping requires a Freeze Miser at the discharge end also.


How do I know if it is working or not?
Ambient air temperature of say 28°F may take a while to chill the water within the Freeze Miser to its activation temperature of just under 37°F.
Why does the faucet on the south side of my house drip less than the faucet on the north side of the house?
 Many reasons factor into the difference.Wind chill, shade, length of piping exposed etc.
What factor does ground water temperature have on the amount of drip from the Freeze Miser?
The actual ground water temperature, prior to being exposed to ambient air at the surface, can make a substantial difference in the amount of water the Freeze Miser will release, all other factors being the same, i.e.  Air temperature, wind, etc. With ground water temperature of 55°F - 65°F the Freeze Miser will release less water than if ground water is 45°F.  It is possible that if ambient air temperature is above 37°F, the Freeze Miser may still be releasing water because the water it’s sensing is less than 37°F.
Can you adjust the settings of the Freeze Miser to drip more?

No, there is not an adjustment mechanism on the Freeze Miser.  To try and adjust will void the warranty.


What happens if it fails? How do I know if it fails?

If the Freeze Miser ever fails it falls back to its “fail-safe” mode which means it will continuously release water that is above 37°F.  This would insure that in a freezing situation your faucet/ hose is still protected and after it is obvious that it not cold you have notification that it needs replacing.

Can the Freeze Miser be facing upwards and still work?

The position of the Freeze Miser should be horizontal or vertical with the small brass end pointed downward in the vertical position.


Will it work on a Y connection, where I have my water hose on one side and the Freeze Miser on the other?

Yes and it will protect the faucet, but not protect the hose on the other outlet.  Either take the hose off or put another Freeze Miser on the hose end and make sure both valves on the Y and the faucet are all opened.


Does my faucet need to be turned all the way on?

Yes, and the Freeze Miser requires a minimum of 10 psi. water pressure.  This insures that when the Freeze miser opens to allow 37°F water to be released, there is enough water pressure to release as required.


Will water quality affect the Freeze Miser’s ability to function properly?

Based on potential water quality problems, i.e. rust, scale, sand or other impurities, it may be necessary at regular intervals to check the Freeze Miser for this issue.  After removal of the Freeze Miser look inside the threaded end for anything visible that is a particulate. Wipe with a cloth, blow out with air and if satisfied it is clean, reinstall.  If the particulate matter is wedged between the stainless steel rod and the seals, subject the Freeze Miser to ice water until the stainless steel rod is recessed away from the seal. Immediately place on an outdoor faucet an open the valve allowing the pressured water to flush any additional particulate from the Freeze Miser.
